WASHINGTON, D.C. – Aleksandra Kazala finished with 19 kills to lift American University to a 25-18, 25-11, 25-19 sweep over Lafayette in a Patriot League volleyball match played Saturday at Bender Arena.
The Eagles improved to 11-6 overall and 2-0 in the PL, sweeping their two matches this weekend to open the league schedule. AU swept Bucknell on Friday night and has won five of its last six matches.
The Leopards fell to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the PL.
AU finished with 10 service aces on Saturday after posting nine on Friday. American hit .461 on Saturday following a .183 percentage against Bucknell.
Elizabeth Walsh led the Leopards with nine kills.
AU used a 7-1 run midway through the opening set to take a 17-11 lead. The Leopards pulled within 17-14, but couldn't get closer, as Kazala's seventh kill of the set came on set point.
The Eagles earned leads of 5-0, 12-1 and 15-5 on their way to the win in the second set, as Kazala again posted seven kills in the set.
AU again jumped out to an early advantage in set three, leading 7-1. Lafayette came back, though, pulling within 10-8. The Eagles held a lead between two and four points down the stretch, and Samantha Snyder got three service aces in the final four points of the set to close out the match.
American travels to Delaware State on Wednesday in its final non-conference match of the regular season before facing Army West Point on Friday and Holy Cross on Saturday.
The Eagles' next home match is on Tuesday, Oct. 4 against Navy.
