Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The American University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 (2OT) tie with Liberty on Friday evening at Osbourne Field. 

"Tough non-conference game tonight," head coach Todd West said. "I'm proud our guys were able to fight back from a 1-0 deficit. Disappointed to tie, but pleased with our overall performance. Joe Iraola scored a magnificent goal tonight."  

American finished the game with a 20-14 edge in shots and 7-5 in corner kicks. American keeper Lucas Belanger made six saves while Liberty keeper James Knoebel made 10. 

Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute on a goal by Tresor Mbuyu with an assist by Jovanni Chavez. Two minutes after the goal, Belanger made a big save on Mbuyu. 

American tied the contest at 76:01 on a free kick goal by Iraola from 35 yards out.

In the first overtime, AU had four chances to secure the win on shots by Panos Nahkid, Joel Hart, Danny Kaiser and Iraola.

In the final two minutes of the contest, Iraola took his fourth shot on goal but was stopped by Knoebel. 

American will take on West Virginia on Tuesday evening from Morgantown, West Virginia.
