Box Score WASHINGTON — Vinny Barone led the No. 20 American with a pair of goals and Max Holdsworth added three assists to propel the Eagles over Cornell, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field in the finale of the Capitol Cup.
Barone's four points led the Eagles offensively along with three from Holdsworth and Danny Kaiser. Joe Iraola had two assists to help in the winning effort.
The Eagles finished with a 12-10 lead in shots and controlled the corners, 10-2. AU had five corner kicks within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Lucas Belanger made three saves and his counterparts Mitchell Mayer and Vince Brunetti combined for five saves.
American (3-1-2) found the back of the net four times in the opening 45 as Barone kicked off the offensive attack in the 18th minute. Iraola and Holdsworth were tabbed with the assists on the tic-tac-toe passing.
The hosts added its second tally two minutes later on a header by Chris Fanet off a double pass by Iraola and Panos Nakhid.
Cornell cut the deficit in the 22nd minute after a scramble in front of the net allowed Brady Dickens the opportunity to score.
The Eagles added two more on the final 15 minutes of the half. Garrett Muzikowski sent a one-timer into the net off a feed from Kaiser. The fourth goal came with five minutes left off a phenomenal cross by Holdsworth bending the ball to the goal mouth allowing Kaiser to tap it in.
In the second, Barone and Holdsworth teamed up again on a through ball that beat Brunetti for his second of the day.
Cornell added its second goal in the 62nd minute on a pass from Dickens over to Madison Heck.
American hits the road for its next two matches against Liberty on Sept. 16 and West Virginia on Sept. 20.
