Box Score 2 FAIRFAX, Va. – Following its five-set victory to open the season on Friday, American University split a pair of five-setters on Saturday, beating host George Mason and losing to Howard in the D.C. Volleyball Challenge.
The Eagles beat the host Patriots 21-25, 28-26, 30-28, 20-25 and 15-11 in their first match of the day.
AU then recovered from two sets down against the Bison, but dropped the match 25-9, 25-19, 25-27, 18-25, 15-11.
Four of Webb's kills came in the fifth and deciding set.
Loren McKenzie had five blocks for the AU defense, with Etheridge finishing with four.
Webb had 16 kills for the Eagles in the nightcap against Howard, while McBride had 10 blocks. Largay had a team-high 20 digs, while senior
Julita Kurdziuk finished with seven kills and seven blocks.
The two teams combined to post 30 team blocks in a match played well above the net.
The final set had five ties and three lead changes in a battle between local teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament.
Next up, American plays host to seventh-ranked University of Washington Sunday at 4 p.m. in the 10th annual Bender Blue Out match. The Eagles will try again to break the D.C. single-game volleyball attendance record of 2,629, set at last year's Blue Out.
