Garcia's Golden Goal Leads Men's Soccer into PL Final

WASHINGTON — Senior Jake Garcia didn't want his career to end on his home pitch so he took the game into his own hands and scored twice to propel the American University men's soccer team over Bucknell, 2-1 (2OT) in the Patriot League Semifinals on Friday afternoon at Reeves Field.

With the win, AU moves to the PL Final on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Eagles will take on Colgate, which beat Loyola Maryland, 3-1, in the other semifinal. American (11-5-4) defeated Colgate, 3-0, in their regular-season matchup at Reeves Field. 

The Eagles didn't get off to a hot start with the Bison scoring in the 10th minute of play off a Sebastiaan Blickman goal. Danny Teran started the play with a pass over to Blickman who beat AU keeper Lucas Belanger low. 

American finished the contest with a 22-6 edge in shots and really kicked it into high gear midway through the second half. Bison keeper Ryan Ott made eight saves with a pair of consecutive point-blank shots from AU in front of the net. 

American broke the deficit with 2:30 left in regulation with Garcia's header from Panos Nakhid.

In the second overtime, Joe Iraola sent the final of 12 AU corner kicks into the box to Chris Fanet who flicked it over to Garcia for the game-winning goal. Garcia picked to the All-Patriot Second Team now has four goals on the season. 

Belanger finished with one save as the AU defense once again played strong.
