Box Score WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Kazala had five of her team-high 11 kills in the final set and Shannon Webb added 10 to lift American to a 25-17, 25-23, 26-24 volleyball win over Lehigh Friday in a battle of the first- and second-place teams in the Patriot League.
The Eagles won their seventh straight match and the 10th in the last 11 to improve to 16-6 overall and 6-0 in the PL.
The Mountain Hawks fell to 8-11 and 4-2 in the league, suffering their second straight loss.
Julia Pressley had 10 kills for the Mountain Hawks, while Emily Develle had 10 digs.
Lehigh suffered eight attack errors in the first set with only six kills. American pulled out to a 5-1 lead and never gave up the advantage. The Mountain Hawks pulled within 15-12, but a 5-1 run by the Eagles enabled AU to close out the set, 25-17.
Lehigh went out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but AU pulled even at 8-8. The set was tied 13 times the rest of the way, with the last coming at 23-23. Following a service error by the Mountain Hawks, AU got a kill from Webb to take a two-set lead.
There were a dozen ties in the final set. AU's largest lead of the set came at 19-15, but Lehigh pulled even at 20-20. The teams traded points when a kill by Emily Poole gave Lehigh a set point at 24-23.
But three straight kills from Kazala brought the Eagles back from the brink and gave them the sweep.
American plays host to Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Raiders came into the weekend tied for third place with Army West Point with a 3-1 league mark.
