ANNAPOLIS, Md. — After 110 minutes of tough competition neither American nor Navy could find the back of the net resulting in a scoreless double-overtime tie on a fall night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Complex.

"Tough road PL match against a desperate Navy team fighting for its postseason lives," said head coach Todd West. 

American (8-5-4, 5-1-1 PL) remain in first place in the league with 16 points after Loyola (Md.) fell to Bucknell 1-0 and Army West Point defeated Colgate, 2-1 (2ot). 

The Eagles finished with an 11-10 edge in shots with the Midshipmen holding a 5-1 advantage in the final 20 minutes.

Kibu Mbaluku had a chance in the 10th minute after a corner kick by Joe Iraola, but Mac Burke made the stop. Mbaluku had another chance in the 26th minute, but the shot went wide. 

Late in the half, Tim Neumann's shot was blocked near goal. 

"In the first half, we were very good and created several clear scoring opportunities. After the intermission, chances were few for both teams," said West. 

Navy's leading scorer Sam Bascom had an opportunity in the 57th minute, but a great save byLucas Belanger kept the game tied. 

American had one last chance late in regulation on a header by Jake Garcia that was saved by Burke. 

In the second overtime, Diego Manrique's shot was saved by Belanger after a corner kick was served into the box by Daniel Zaremba.

Belanger and Burke each had three saves for their respective teams.

"A win would have been great, however with other results we are still in a great position to win a PL regular season championship and host the PL tournament," said West. 

"We are consistently one of the top programs in our conference. We know that we have a chance to compete for a championship."

American will host Holy Cross on Sunday at 1 p.m. in its final Reeves Field test before the Patriot League Tournament.

NOTES: With the tie, American clinches a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for the ninth straight season. Last season, American hosted Army West Point (4-1) in the PL Quarterfinals. The last time American hosted the semifinals and finals of the league tournament were in 2012.
