Men's Soccer Falls to No. 1 Maryland, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Gordon Wild scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute, but the American University men's soccer team played a thorough contest at No. 1 Maryland in the 2-1 loss on Tuesday evening. 

In the 20th minute, Tim Neumann had a chance at goal with a free kick outside of the 18-yard box that sailed wide. 

Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on a shot from 18 yards out by Amar Sejdic. Jake Rozhansky was credited with the assist. 

American tied the contest seven minutes later on a header goal by Chris Fanet off a free kick by Neumann. 

The hosts had two more chances before the half but both went wide of Lucas Belanger.

In the 51st minute, Jake Garcia had a pair of chances to take the lead, but his first attempt hit the top of the bar and his second skipped over the top. A minute later, Wild had an attempt that was stopped by Belanger. 

Maryland took a 2-1 lead on a blast by Wild from 16 yards out to the top shelf. 

Panos Nakhid had a chance to tie the contest with less than 30 seconds remaining but Maryland keeper Cody Neidermeier challenged the point-blank shot. 

Maryland finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots. 

American will travel to Bucknell on Saturday to meet the Bison in an important Patriot League match. Loyola (Md.) holds the lead in the standings by one point with four games remaining.
