Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Shannon Webb and sophomore Kennedy Etheridge each posted double-doubles to help American to a 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 sweep at Holy Cross in a Patriot League volleyball match on Sunday.
The win gave the Eagles a sweep of their two league matches on the weekend, improving AU's record to 14-6 overall and 4-0 in the PL. American has now won five straight and eight of its last nine.
The Crusaders fell to 4-13 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Webb had 13 kills and 14 digs, while Etheridge had 37 assists and 10 digs.
Aleksandra Kazala had 12 kills, while
Vela McBride finished with five blocks.
"We had a hard time getting up for this match after last night's big one at Army, and we did not come out as strong as we should have," said AU head coach Barry Goldberg. "Holy Cross played with nothing to lose on its home court and made things difficult for us.
"We made big plays at the end of each set, and it was just enough for us to succeed with another road victory. Through the ups and downs, it's clear we are making improvement, but there are still a number of big matches to come."
Mandy Sifferlen had 18 kills to lead Holy Cross on offense.
The last of 11 ties in the first set came at 19-19, when the Eagles picked up a pair of points on ball-handling errors by Holy Cross. AU held on at that point to finish out the match.
The second set was tied 9-9 when Kazala had four kills as part of a six-point run. The Crusaders were able to come within 16-12, but the lead was never less than four points for the rest of the set.
American had leads between one and three points through the third set, but Holy Cross tied the match at 19-19. Four attack errors by the Crusaders down the stretch, though, pushed AU to the win.
American returns home for three Patriot League matches next week. The Eagles host Navy on Tuesday, Lehigh on Friday and Colgate on Saturday.
