Box Score WASHINGTON - JoJo Miller and Madie Light scored in the second half to propel the American University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.
Miller broke the scoreless tie in the 74th minute off a beautiful cross by Bruna Gomez, led to Miller taking a shot from 30 yards out. Nearly eight minutes later, Light trickled a shot past LIU keeper Jessica Montrose, who tried to swat the ball out before it crossed the line.
American (2-4) set the tempo early and dominated the possession on the field.
Charlene Belanger made three saves for her first win and clean sheet of the season. Montrose made seven stops but allowed two second half goals.
American finished the game with a 16-3 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
American played a good first half and outshot LIU 8-1 with Montrose recording five saves.
Yari Bradford had three of the eight shots for the Eagles and had a great chance in the 11th minute, but hit the post after receiving a through ball.
Marley Jennings and Kelly Donovan had chances also in the frame, but Montrose held her ground for the Black and White. Tori Shinkowitz had the lone LIU shot in the first half in the 31st minute.
In the second, Madison Gomez had LIU's best chance with a header in the 52nd minute, but Belanger was in position to make the catch.
American will begin a three-game road trip next Friday at Howard. The team will return back to Reeves Field to begin Patriot League play against Boston University on Sept. 26.
