WASHINGTON – After leading the Eagles to a runner-up finish at the AU Volleyball Classic, senior setter Monika Smidova has been chosen as the GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the Week.

Allison Cappellino, was selected to the AU Volleyball Classic all-tournament team for her performance in the Eagles' 2-1 weekend. American swept William & Mary and UMBC before dropping a five-set heartbreaker to Virginia in the final match of the tournament.
Against William & Mary, Smidova led American with 26 assists and 14 digs, while recording six kills on nine attempts. She finished with 24 assists, two kills and two digs in just two sets against UMBC. In the Eagles' five-set loss to Virginia, Smidova recorded a season-high 52 assists, while adding 10 digs, four blocks and two kills.
For the weekend, Smidova averaged 10.2 assists, 2.6 digs, 1.0 kills, 0.9 blocks and 0.8 aces per set, and posted a .308 attack percentage.
The Eagles begin Patriot League play this weekend, Sept. 25-26, with a pair of road games, visiting Lafayette on Friday and Bucknell on Saturday.
