Albuquerque, N.M. — Dale Ludwig scored the game-winning goal in the sixth minute to propel the No. 21 American University men's soccer team over No. 18 Loyola Marymount, 1-0, at the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational on Friday.

The Eagles took a lead early in the match after  Joel Hart played the ball to Ludwig at the top of the box. Ludwig dribbled through more than one defender before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

American never looked back, as Dylan Hobert recorded his fourth clean sheet of the season. Despite several good efforts by the Lions, Hobert was only forced to make one save because of quality defending by the AU back line.

Ludwig nearly added another goal to his tally late in the second half when fellow Junior Joe Iraola served a lofted corner that Ludwig headed right over the bar.

Only moments later Ludwig headed the ball toward goal with a diving header that just went past the post.

The Lions best chance came late in the second half when Alvaro Madrigal played the ball across the face of goal past Hobert, but there was no one to get on the end of it to finish for Loyola Marymount.

American's win brings them to 6-1-0 on the season as they achieve their second win over a ranked opponent this season.

The Eagles will face tournament host No. 17 New Mexico on Sunday at 6 p.m. before beginning conference play at Colgate next weekend.
