WASHINGTON – The American University women's soccer team completed its preseason schedule Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Robert Morris University.
Sophomore Kaylee Hillard scored American's first goal in the 46th minute of the match after a loose ball fell to the feet of senior Kelly Donovan, who then set up Hillard for the shot.
"We just got a big spark from Kaylee off the bench," said American head coach Anabel Hering. "She just recently made an individual goal to shoot more often and score more goals this season, and it was a lot of good individual effort on that goal."
The Eagles' second goal came from a set piece, as junior Marley Jennings drew a foul in the box, before converting the penalty kick.
The AU defense also held firm, not allowing any goals, and drawing Robert Morris offside multiple times.
The match, consisting of three 30-minute periods, gave both teams the opportunity to draw from their bench and use a variety of players as they head to the regular season.
"Getting the confidence of a win under our belt going into the season is definitely going to help," said Hering.
With their preseason schedule finished, the Eagles will start the regular season at Longwood University on Aug. 21, before hosting George Mason for the team's home opener at 1 p.m. on Aug. 23.
