WASHINGTON – In its first exhibition of the 2015 season, the American women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against local rival George Washington Wednesday at Reeves Field.
"I think it was a good trial run to try some new formations," said American head coach Anabel Hering. "We're trying some new things this year. The good thing is that a lot of our young players are talented. The hard thing that we need to work on is some tactical stuff, movement and pushing forward."
With the contest divided into three 30-minute periods, the Eagles were able to try out a variety of lineups. Each player on AU's roster, including all three goalkeepers, saw action, demonstrating the team's strength from top to bottom.
"It's good to see that we can hold our own with reserves," said Hering. "We're able to extend through our bench and use those players too. We're going to need to since our roster is pretty low right now.
"I think we did a decent job of holding (GW) and not letting them penetrate through and defend well, but when it comes to attacking, our last pass is not connecting. Possession, and I think fitness overall, are just things to be working on."
The Eagles will wrap up its preseason schedule this Saturday, Aug. 15, when they host Robert Morris in a 3 p.m. exhibition. Meanwhile, AU opens the regular season Aug. 21 with a non-conference match-up at Longwood.
