CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Freshman James Washington was named the Lids Team Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week after leading the American men's basketball team to its first win of the season, the league announced on Monday. Washington was also named the GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week. 

Washington finished the week averaging 15.0 points per game after a 19-point performance at New Hampshire on Saturday. The Norwalk, California, native helped the Eagles battle back from a five-point deficit at the half (28-23) to a win, 68-50. 

Washington shot 7-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-5 from the outside.  He also corralled five rebounds and two steals. 

Earlier in the week, Washington scored 11 points off the bench in a tough loss to VCU on the road. 

The AU rookie ranks third on the team in scoring, averaging 7.8 points per game this season. He becomes the first Lids Team Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week from American since current teammate Jesse Reed was honored in 2012-13. 

American will head to Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip. The contest can be heard live on WFED 1500 AM and seen on NECfrontrow.com.
