Men's Soccer Advances to PL Semifinals With 4-1 Win Over Army West Point

Box Score

WASHINGTONLiam Robley had a goal and an assist, one of four different Eagles to score goals, as American University earned a 4-1 victory over Army West Point in a Patriot League men's soccer quarterfinal match Tuesday at Reeves Field.

"It was difficult conditions today," said head coach Todd West. "We had a lot of water on the field over the past few days."

Chris Fanet, Dale Ludwig and Vinny Barone also had goals, while Kibu Mbaluku chipped in an assist for AU, which rallied to score four unanswered goals after falling behind in the 22nd minute.

The win pushed the third-seeded Eagles (13-4-3) into Friday's Patriot League semifinal against No. 2-seed Boston University.

AU and BU will play the 7 p.m. semifinal at top-seeded Colgate, after the Red Raiders face the winner of Tuesday's late quarterfinal which has No. 5 Bucknell at No. 4 Lehigh.

"We have the ability to right our wrongs against Boston on Friday," said West.

Army, which came in as the sixth seed in the tournament, ended its season at 5-8-5.

The win extended American's unbeaten streak to nine straight matches (7-0-2).

The Black Knights hit the scoreboard first. Alex Jaroscak sent Nick Williams into the box with a through ball and the Army junior beat AU goalkeeper Dylan Hobert with a move to get open and punched in the goal with 21:57 gone in the first half.

Less than two minutes later, Chris Fanet knocked a header inside the left post off a free kick from Robley for the equalizer. The 1-1 score held up until halftime.

Four minutes into the second half, a set piece again gave the Eagles a chance. After Army punched away a free kick attempt, the ball came to Ludwig at the top of the box and he ripped home a strike to put AU ahead.

Barone took a pass from Mbaluku on the right wing and converted goal with a shot inside the right post at the 65:49 mark for AU's third goal.

Robley scored on a penalty kick with 15:56 left in the game, beating Army keeper Chris Britt inside the right post for the final tally.

Britt made seven saves, as American held a 21-6 edge in shots. Hobert had three saves in the Eagle net. AU held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks in the game.
