Ludwig's OT Winner Clinches PL Men's Soccer Tournament Berth

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. —  Junior Dale Ludwig scored in the 107th minute to give the American University men's soccer team a 1-0 (2OT) win on the road at Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon.

American improves to 12-4-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Patriot League. The win puts the Eagles in the upcoming PL Tournament with 16 points. With one game remaining, AU sits in third place with a chance to claim a bye into the semifinals with a win next Saturday against Lehigh and losses by Boston University or Colgate.

The match looked as if it may end scoreless until a corner kick in the 107th minute found the feet of Ludwig, who took a slight touch to his left before placing it in the bottom right corner past Kevin Wright.

It seemed that Holy Cross was going to take an early lead when Eddie Viscount headed the ball off the crossbar. Only moments later, the Eagles had a very good chance of their own when junior Kibu Mbaluku hit the crossbar on a strike from the top of the box.

The second half was fairly quiet with both teams having strong defensive efforts.

In the 52nd minute of the match, senior keeper Dylan Hobert broke the American University single-season record for most consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.

The record was previously held by Bill Ruvo in the 1979 campaign, with 704 consecutive minutes. Hobert now holds the record at over 750 minutes without conceding.

"It was a fantastic team effort," said head coach Todd West. "Seven shutouts in a row and the back four was outstanding again."

In extra time, it looked as if American was going to break the deadlock when Joel Hart found himself one-on-one with the keeper. However, Hart's shot went just over the bar, only minutes before Ludwig's game winner.

"Today was a great away victory at one of the toughest places to play in the Patriot League," said West.

Both teams finished with 15 shots each with the Eagles taking five in the extra time. AU held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

American returns home for their final match of the regular season at against Lehigh on Saturday at 1 p.m.
