Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The American University men's soccer team completed its non-league schedule with a 1-0 victory over No. 19 Virginia on Tuesday evening.
The victory is AU's ninth on the season and third over a nationally-ranked team this season. Earlier in the year, the Eagles defeated then-No. 17 Hofstra and No. 18 Loyola Marymount.
American is now 9-4-1 overall while Virginia drops to 7-3-2.
Joe Iraola scored the lone goal of the night in the 12th minute on a laser shot from outside the box that hit off the post. Vinny Barone was credited with the assist on the goal.
Both teams finished with 13 shots each, with Dylan Hobert credited with four saves. Virginia keeper Jeff Caldwell also made four saves.
This was the first time this season that the defending NCAA Champion was shut out.
The Cavaliers had multiple chances in the second half where there outshot the Eagles, 9-6, but the combination of Hobert and the AU defense kept the ball out of the net.
American will travel to the Empire State to meet Army West Point on Saturday night.
