American Defeats Lehigh in Straight Sets on the Road

Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a grueling five-set victory on Friday evening, the American University volleyball team came back focused on Saturday, earning a 25-17, 29-27, 25-20 road victory over Lehigh.

The Eagles, avenging their lone Patriot League loss from the 2014 season, improved to 15-5 on the season and 7-0 in the league. The Mountain Hawks fell to 11-9 overall and 4-2 in the league.

AU senior Allison Cappellino posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs, while classmates Sarah Katz and Kristyna Lindovska added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

The Eagles came out strong in set one, leading most of the way to pick up the first-set victory. Meanwhile, the Mountain Hawks held the early 8-6 lead in set two before the Eagles scored five straight points to pull ahead. While American extended its lead to 22-15, Lehigh battled back, tying the set at 24-24. The Mountain Hawks took the lead, but the Eagles were able to fight off three set points to earn the win.

The two teams traded points for much of the third set, which featured 10 tie scores. However, Cappellino and Lindovska each recorded three kills down the stretch to break a 16-16 tie, giving American its sixth PL sweep of the season.

"We attacked well today and didn't have as many mistakes as yesterday," said Lindovska. "I think we were all very fired up to win after yesterday's match, so I think we took care of business rather well."

The Eagles wrap up their four-game road swing on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when they visit Loyola Maryland in a 7 p.m. contest.
