AU UPSET: Men's Soccer Defeats No. 1 UCLA in Overtime

Box Score

American University men's soccer delivered one of its best wins in program history on Friday night in Albuquerque, New Mexico, defeating No. 1 UCLA, 2-1, in overtime at the Lobo Invitational.

Sophomore forward Dale Ludwig's golden goal in the 96th minute proved to be the difference as AU never trailed in the match.

"'We played really well and deserved this win," said head coach Todd West. "We expect big things from this group."

American and UCLA have met three times before, but not since 1987. The first ever matchup came in the 1985 NCAA Tournament. In that game, it took eight overtimes decide a victor.

On Friday night in New Mexico, it took only six minutes of the first OT period as AU downed the nation's top-ranked team and picked up the program's first win over the Bruins.

The Eagles seemed to surprise the country's No. 1 team, outshooting UCLA 11-4 in the first half.

AU also struck first to grab momentum, as senior captain Stephen Hauschild took the feed from sophomore Jake Garcia and buried it from inside the box.

American rode its new-found wave of energy and offensive output, and led the Bruins until the 77th minute. UCLA was able to tie it up, matching with its own goal from inside the AU box.

The Eagles refused to back down however and six minutes into extra time, the Eagles broke through.

Senior co-captain Jordan Manley threw one in from the sideline, deep in UCLA territory, and found Ludwig open from 15 yards out. The sophomore striker blasted one at the Bruins keeper and although he was able to get his hand on it, the ball found its way to the back of the net for the upset victory.

While AU's offense grabbed the headlines, the American defense made it possible. Manley's back line held the top-ranked Bruins to only 11 shots; just four on goal. Junior goalkeeper Dylan Hobert made three saves in the match to earn the win.

The Eagles now look to ride the momentum into its second game at New Mexico's Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament when they face UC Riverside on Sunday at 2 p.m., EDT.
