No. 14 Eagles Find Equalizer to Earn Tie Against Hartford, 1-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The No.14 American University men's soccer team fought back to earn a tie on Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field, pulling even with Hartford, 1-1, in a double overtime draw. The Hawks struck first, but senior co-captain Jordan Manley's first career goal helped the Eagles earn a point and move AU's undefeated streak to six games.

Hartford scored just three minutes into the game, but American found the equalizer in the first half. Manley took the feed in the box from sophomore Dale Ludwig and finished from seven yards out.

The Eagles held a 28-12 shot advantage over the Hawks, but Hartford keeper David Mckinnon made nine saves in the match.

"We are disappointed to not come away with the win, but we were able to play our game after a slow start that saw Hartford capitalize on an early mistake by us," said head coach Todd West. "It was physical game and we did well to handle that pressure. We need to do a better job of finishing the chances that present themselves."

American put 10 shots on goal, but could not find the go-ahead score or the golden kick in extra time.

Sophomore Panos Nakhid led the way with six shots and three on goal, while 11 total Eagles registered a shot in the contest.

Hartford's goal, which was only 2:23 into the match, came off a header in the box by Romaine Williamson. The score was one of only four total shots on goal allowed by American.

It was a hard-hitting contest, with 39 fouls and two cards issued in the match. Harford registered 24 of those whistles with both cards.

Despite the early goal, the AU defense stood up after, holding the Hawks scoreless in the final 117 minutes.

American begins Patriot League play this weekend at Lehigh. Kickoff on Saturday is slated for 7 p.m.
