- American University volleyball player Monika
Smidova was selected as the Patriot League Molten Player
of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
Smidova was also honored as the GEICO AU Student-Athlete of the
Week.
It marks the second time this
season that Smidova has been chosen as the Molten Player of the
Week and the first as a GEICO honoree.
Smidova, a senior setter from
Plzen, Czech Republic, received most valuable player accolades at
the Rutgers Invitational this past weekend, leading American to
wins over Princeton (3-1), Rutgers (3-1) and Akron (3-0).
For the weekend, Smidova averaged
10.36 assists and 2.91 digs per set, along with a .455 attack
percentage. She recorded a season-high 49 assists in the
Eagles' win over Princeton, while matching her career high
with 16 digs against Rutgers.
Smidova, who has posted
double-doubles in eight of 12 matches this season, now has 2,261
assists in her career, just 209 shy of the top five in program
history.
The Eagles open their 2014 Patriot
League slate this Friday, Sept. 26, when they host Bucknell at 7:00
p.m.
