Box Score The American University lacrosse team dropped its final
non-conference game of the regular season, falling at No. 16
Virginia, 18-4, on Tuesday night.
Virginia (6-6) rattled off eight unanswered goals in the first
20 minutes of play. Terese
Buechli put the Eagles on the board off the pass from
Olivia
Mangan with under nine minutes to go in the half. The
Cavaliers added three more tallies to close out the half, heading
into the intermission with an 11-1 lead.
Mary Alati scored in the first minute of the second half for
Virginia but Jamie
Silverman and Buechli notched back-to-back scores for
American (4-9) to cut the lead to 12-3 with 22:38 to play. The
Cavaliers answered with five straight goals to go up 17-3.
Sarah
Bootman added her first collegiate goal with 5:30
remaining but Virginia's Besser Dyson was able to close out the
scoring for the 18-4 final score.
Buechli had a team-high two points on a pair of goals and
Emily
Maher led the team with four draw controls. Jackie
Ferri, Nicole
Lombardo and Olivia
McCarthy collected a team-best two ground balls
apiece. Ferri also made five saves as the starting goalkeeper.
Casey Bocklet and Alati led the Cavaliers with four points
apiece. Courtney Swan had a hat trick to go along with four draw
controls. Daniela Eppler, Maggie Press and Morgan Stephens recorded
two ground balls collected. Liz Colgan had four stops between the
pipes for Virginia.
The Cavaliers held a 28-13 advantage in shots, 17-10 advantage
in ground balls collected and 15-9 edge in draw controls.
American returns to Jacobs Field on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 1 p.m.
when it hosts Lafayette for the 2014 Lax Blowout. The game will be
broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
