Box Score The American University women's basketball team had its six-game
win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in West Point, N.Y.,
falling to Army, 64-60.
Arron
Zimmerman led the Eagles with 20 points, going 4-of-7
from beyond the arc, while Alexis
Dobbs scored 17 points and Jen Dumiak
chipped in 10. Shaquilla
Curtis and Dobbs posted six rebounds apiece to lead
American as Dobbs also had a team-high three assists. The senior
also broke the program record for starts in the game, starting her
112th career contest.
"I think the game came down to could we stop their two best
players and could we rebound and we did neither," said Head Coach
Megan Gebbia. "I think what we have to
take away from this game is that we are able to play with the top
teams and we just need to be able to finish out plays, whether that
means getting rebounds or making stops, we need to be able to do
that. That's the one thing that's going to get us over this hurdle
of losing close games."
The teams traded scores to open the game before American (19-8,
12-4) went on a 6-0 run for the 10-5 advantage at 15:36. Army
answered with a 7-0 run to retake the lead. The game was knotted up
at 16-all when Zimmerman hit her first trey of the contest to give
the Eagles the advantage as a Lauren
Crisler drive put American up 21-20 with 7:11 to
play.
A Dobbs triple sparked a 12-3 Eagles' run as it took a 33-25
lead with 2:52 remaining. The Black Knights closed out the half
with seven unanswered points to cut American's lead to one, 33-32,
at the break.
The Eagles shot 40.9 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent
from beyond the arc in the first half. Army shot 46.2 percent from
the field and were 3-of-9 from 3-point range.
Army (19-7, 11-4) opened the half on a 14-5 run to take the lead
for good, going up 46-38 at 13:04 and forcing American to call its
first timeout. A turnaround jumper from Curtis made it a four-point
game and Dobbs hit a triple to put the score at 54-49 with 6:14 to
play.
Neither team was able to score for the next three minutes before
Zimmerman drilled in back-to-back treys to cut the Black Knights'
lead to two, 57-55, with 1:24 to play. Jen Hazlett drained a
3-pointer with 19 seconds to play and the team traded free throws
as Army led 62-57 with 12.2 seconds remaining. Dobbs nailed a
triple from the top of the key to cut the advantage back to two but
Kelsey Minato hit a pair of free throws and Dumiak's last second
3-point attempt was off the mark for the 64-60 final score.
Hazlett and Minato finished with 20 points apiece for the Black
Knights. Hazlett posted 12 rebounds to complete the double-double
as Army held a 40-28 advantage in rebounds for the game. Brianna
Johnson led the team with five assists.
The Black Knights outshot American 40.7 to 37.5 percent from the
floor. The Eagles went 7-of-17 from 3-point range while Army was
6-of-17.
American will look to bounce back when it hosts Navy in its
final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7
p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot
League Network.
