Men's Soccer Edged By Army on Penalty Kicks in Patriot League Quarterfinal

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The American University men's soccer team kept its unbeaten streak at home against Army intact, playing the Black Knights scoreless through double overtime in a Patriot League Quarterfinal match, but the U.S. Military Academy was able to advance, 4-3, on penalty kicks.

American (11-4-4) outshot Army, 17-9, in the contest but two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Winston Boldt showed why he was deserving of the honor, making five saves, including two on point-blank chances in overtime.

Facing a penalty kick shoot, Boldt was able to stand up again as his teammates took care of the rest.

"Hats off to Army and a sensational effort by Winston Boldt," said head coach Todd West. "We now get back to training and preparing as if we have a game next week as we play the waiting game with the NCAA Selection show on Monday."

The Eagles came into the match ranked 31st nationally and boasts high-profile wins including a 2-1 overtime victory over then-No. 1 UCLA.

Against Army on Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field, the Eagles had the possession advantage and looked to break through several times.

Second Team All-Patriot League selection Dale Ludwig registered five shots in the match, including both close proximity shots on Boldt in OT, but the Black Knights were able to hold.

The Eagles are now 6-0-2 all-time against Army at home, but it will be the U.S. Military Academy advancing to the Patriot League semifinals this weekend at Boston University.
