Men's Soccer Earns Patriot League Point in Scoreless Draw At BU

Box Score

Boston – The American University men's soccer team took on the No. 1 team in the Patriot League on Saturday, traveling up to Boston University. Despite driving rains, high winds a slick turf, the Eagles were able to hold the high-scoring Terriers off the scoreboard for 0-0 double overtime draw.

The two teams that are both receiving votes in the National Top 25 Poll battled through the adverse conditions and totaled 24 shots, but only four of those found their way on goal.

"I thought we played well today, but unfortunately had a couple of missed opportunities. There were some very tough conditions out there," said head coach Todd West.

Despite the inclement weather, the Eagles were strong in the first half, outshooting BU, 7-2. The Terrier defense and goalkeeper Nick Thomson were up to the challenge however as they were able to keep American off the board.

The momentum shifted 13 minutes into the second as starting goalkeeper Dylan Hobert, who has played every minute between the posts for AU this season, was forced from the game due to injury.

Boston upped its offensive output as the Terriers pushed to find the go-ahead score but new AU keeper Lucas Belanger was up to the task. Playing in his first career game, the sophomore held BU scoreless through 51 minutes, factoring in to the decision.

With the tie, American has now clinched a berth in the 2014 Patriot League Tournament.

The Eagles play two home games this week: a nonconference tilt against Princeton on Wednesday before their final Patriot League match on Senior Day versus Colgate on Saturday.
