– Senior Monika Smidova finished with 25
assists and 10 digs, while junior Allison
Cappellino scored a team-high 10 kills as the American
University volleyball team swept Loyola University Maryland, 25-14,
25-15, 25-17 on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles, who have won 10
straight matches, improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the Patriot
League, while the Greyhounds fell to 2-16 overall and 0-5 in the
league.
AU grabbed a decisive victory in
the first set, putting together a 16-3 run to pull away. The Eagles
recorded six service aces in the opening set, including
back-to-back aces by Smidova that pushed American to a 21-7
advantage. Senior Kelly McCaddin finished with
four kills in the set to lead the Eagles, who registered a .310
attack percentage.
In the second set, American
sprinted out to an early 12-5 lead before a run by Loyola cut the
margin to one point. However, the Eagles finished out the set on a
roll, outscoring the Greyhounds 12-3 to capture the win. Cappellino
led AU in the set with four kills, while senior Kristyna
Lindovska added three kills and a pair of blocks.
Meanwhile, Cappellino and Lindovska
each scored three kills in the final set to lead AU to a
seven-point victory. With a comfortable margin throughout the set,
American was able to hold Loyola to a negative attack percentage in
the third set.
“It was a solid win for
us tonight,” said senior libero Megan
Rosburg. “It's nice to see many parts of our
game steadily improve and come together as the season progresses.
We look to keep this momentum going into this weekend and make a
big statement on our home court.”
The Eagles return home this
weekend, Oct. 10-11, for a pair of Patriot League matches. American
hosts Lehigh on Friday at 7 p.m., while facing Colgate on Saturday
at 2 p.m.
