The American University women's basketball team had its
five-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 64-63
loss to Army.
Jen
Dumiak led three double-digit scorers with 14 points
while Geleisa
George scored 12 and Michelle
Holmes chipped in 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting from
the floor. Arron
Zimmerman pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the
Eagles and Dumiak dished out six assists.
"I'm proud of the team, it was a great game to watch with a lot
of scoring," said Head Coach Megan Gebbia. "It was close, but it
was just too bad we couldn't come out on top. We need more close
games like this. When it comes to the tournament there are always
close games and it's important to work on closing games
out."
The game was knotted up four times early in the first half
before a triple by Brianna Johnson gave Army (14-5, 6-2) a 14-11
edge at the 14:19 mark. American answered with a 6-0 run to go up
21-18 with 8:12 to play but the Black Knights were able to trim the
lead to one on a jumper by Kelsey Minato.
A 3-pointer by Dumiak gave the Eagles a 26-20 lead with 5:40 to
play and Army responded with five straight points to make it a
one-point game with 3:06 to go. American went back up by six,
31-25, on a trey by Lauren
Crisler and a pair of free throws by George with 2:06
remaining in the half. The Black Knights went 5-of-6 from the line
down the stretch and Jordan Elliott closed out the half with a
short jumper to cut the Eagles' lead to 34-32 at the
intermission.
American (13-6, 6-2) shot 56 percent from the floor and went
3-of-9 from 3-point range in the first half. Army shot 47.8 percent
from the field and were 2-of-6 from beyond the arc.
In the second half, Dumiak hit her second triple to notch the
first points of the second half for the Eagles but Army took back
the lead on a 10-0 run for the 44-39 advantage at 12:32.
Back-to-back drives from George and Dumiak gave American the 47-46
edge and the Eagles went up five, 53-48, on a bucket by Holmes on a
dish from Shaquilla
Curtis.
The Black Knights knotted it up at 54-all on a 6-1 run with 5:24
to play. The teams traded buckets before Army went on another 6-0
run for the 62-57 advantage with 3:13 left in the game. American
made it a one-point game twice, including on a lay-in by Holmes
with 1:30 remaining, but the Eagles' attempts at a game-winner were
off the mark as the Black Knights walked away with the 64-63
win.
Army outshot American 48.9 to 47.1 percent from the floor and
35.7 to 21.1 percent from beyond the arc.
The Black Knights had four players in double-figures. Jen
Hazlett scored a game-high 15 points, Minato had 14, Johnson
finished with 13 and Aimee Oertner added 10 points for Army.
Hazlett led the Black Knights with eight boards as Army held a
29-27 edge in rebounds.
