the American University women's basketball team picked up its
second straight win, downing Colgate, 72-55, on Saturday afternoon
in Bender Arena.
Alexis

George pulled down five rebounds apiece to lead
American as it held a 35-31 edge on the glass. Dobbs and Jen
Dumiak each dished out a team-high five assists.
"Colgate's a good team…and even
though we didn't start out the game great we were able to come out
and make a run and finish the half well," said Head Coach Megan Gebbia. "Overall we played well
against the zone today and I hope that we can continue that."
Colgate (4-11, 0-4) struck first, jumping
out to an early 5-0 lead before the Eagles answered with six
straight tallies for the 6-5 edge at the 17-minute mark. Josie
Stockill laid it in to give the Raiders back the one-point
advantage. American had a response once again as Zimmerman and
Dumiak hit back-to-back triples and the Eagles held Colgate without
a bucket for the next five minutes.
A triple from Ti'Asia
McGeorge gave American its first double-digit lead of
the game, 23-12. The Raiders cut it to six on a 5-0 run with 3:49
remaining but a pair of free throws from Sarah
Kiely sparked a 7-0 run for the Eagles. Kelly Reid
closed out the scoring in the first half with a lay-up for the
32-21 American lead at the intermission.
The Eagles shot 41.7 percent from the
floor and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.
Colgate went 8-of-26 from the field and 2-for-9 from three-point
range.
The Raiders notched the first two buckets
out of the break but Zimmerman hit her second triple of the day to
put American (10-5, 3-1) up 32-25 at the 17:59 mark. Colgate
continued to fight back, hitting four straight 3-pointers to make
it a five-point game, 44-39, with 13:10 remaining. Dobbs answered
with a trey of her own and hit another on the Eagles' next
possession to spark a 16-3 run for American's largest lead of the
afternoon, 63-44, with 7:52 to play.
Catherine Lewis ended a four and a half
minute scoreless drought for the Raiders with her third triple and
added her fourth to cut the Eagles' advantage to 65-53 with 1:52 to
go. American was able to hold off a Colgate comeback, going 7-of-8
from the line down the stretch for the 72-55 final score.

apiece for the Raiders and Carole Harris finished with 10. Randyll
Butler posted a game-high eight rebounds. Jones also notched five
assists for Colgate.
The Eagles completed the afternoon
shooting 48.9 percent from the field, going 9-for-16 from
three-point range, while the Raiders shot 34.5 percent and were
9-of-23 from beyond the arc.
