American University volleyball junior Monika Smidova has been honored as the Molten Patriot League Player of the Week and AU Student-Athlete of the Week Presented by GEICO, conference and Department of Athletics officials announced Monday.

Smidova led the Eagles to a perfect 3-0 weekend at the D.C. Volleyball Challenge, sweeping Howard, Georgetown and George Mason to open the year. The Plzen, Czech Republic native averaged 11.50 aps, 2.12 kps and 2.38 dps, hitting .382 over the three matches. She also registered five aces and six blocks over the weekend and was recognized as the tournament MVP.

This is Smidova's first career Patriot League Player of the Week honor.

Smidova and the Eagles return to action this weekend at the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Conn. American faces host Sacred Heart on Friday, September 6 at 4:30 p.m. to open the tournament.
