Volleyball Battles Back for 3-2 Win at Cal State Fullerton

The American University volleyball team closed out its California road trip with its second straight come-from-behind victory, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. 

Cal State Fullerton (7-5) went up 4-1 to open the match and the Eagles fought back within one, 7-6, on an attack error by Bre Moreland. The Titans answered with an 8-3 run for the 15-9 lead and a block by Leah Best and Julie Consani put Cal State Fullerton up 20-13. American prevented set point with a kill by Morgan Hendrix, but the Titans took the 1-0 match lead with a kill by Alyse Hensley for the 25-17 win.

Cal State Fullerton tallied six straight points to take a 14-6 advantage in the second set. The Titans continued to hold off American's attempts to cut its lead, closing out the set on a 9-1 run for the 25-9 victory and 2-0 lead in the match. 

Cal State Fullerton took an early 6-3 lead before a kill by Monika Smidova made it a one-point match, 6-5. The Titans registered four straight tallies for the 17-9 advantage but the Eagles battled back, going on an 8-2 run to make it a two-point game, 19-17. American knotted it up at 20-all on a block by Smidova and Bree Scarbrough and created two more ties before the Eagles completed the comeback with three straight points for the 25-23 win.

American (13-1) held an 8-6 advantage in the fourth set but Cal State Fullerton retook the lead on three straight points. The Eagles answered with a 5-2 run for the 12-10 lead and continued to pull away, tallying three straight points for a 20-17 lead. The Titans cut American's advantage to two, but the Eagles closed out the set with a 5-2 run for the 25-20 victory to knot the match at two sets apiece. 

Cal State Fullerton struck first in the final set, holding onto a slight edge until American tied it up at 11 on a block by Kristyna Lindovska and Hendrix. The Eagles took its first lead of the set on a kill by Hendrix and maintained the lead, securing the win with consecutive kills by Juliana Crum.

Crum posted her fourth straight double-double in the match, leading the team with 15 kills and 17 digs, while Smidova also registered a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs. Hendrix and Smidova each tallied five blocks to lead American. 

The Titans held a .250 to .172 advantage in hitting percentage for the match. Consani and Moreland led Cal State Fullerton with double-doubles. Consani finished with 54 assists and 16 digs and Moreland recorded 23 kills and 13 digs. McKenna Painton led the defensive effort with 20 digs.

The Eagles return to Bender Arena for the first time in nearly a month when it hosts UMBC on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
