The American University men's soccer team earned points in back-to-back games after traveling north to face undefeated Hartford, battling the Hawks to a 0-0 overtime tie.

Although the Hartford offense outshot American 14-7, it was the Eagles defense that stood tall thanks large in part to the Eagles' back four and senior goalie Billy Knutsen, who made four saves.

"Hartford is a very good team; very athletic. This is a good, new starting point for us now after our first shutout of the season, on the road, against an undefeated opponent," said head coach Todd West. "Our defense was solid as was the play of senior Colin Seigfreid. I am very happy with our competitiveness, which is something we will build on." 

Knusten's play in net was key, along with fellow co-captain Cristobal Soto along the back line, who paired with junior Stephen Hauschild, to anchor a strong defensive effort which kept Hartford (3-0-2) off the scoreboard.

American (1-2-2) was unable to find its golden goal, thanks largely to the defensive prowess of Hartford goalie MacKinnon, who improved to 2-0-1 on the season.

AU's defense may have been even stronger however, overcoming shot differentials throughout and a 6-0 deficit in corner kicks.

It was a physical matchup as Hartford totaled 23 fouls to AU's 21.

Seigfreid combined with rookie Michael Cherry to account for the Eagles two shots on goal in the match.

After taking on Hartford, the Eagles will continue a two-game road swing with a mid-week matchup at Longwood on Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m., before returning to Reeves Field on Saturday, September 21 at 4 p.m., against Liberty.
