Box Score Alexis Dobbs's last second three-point attempt was off-target as the American University women's basketball team dropped its Patriot League Quarterfinal match, 46-43, to Bucknell on Thursday night.
Arron Zimmerman finished with a team-high 11 points, hitting three three-pointers, while Stephanie Anya added 10 points with a team-best seven rebounds. Dobbs led the Eagles with five assists and Zimmerman pitched in three steals.
"I felt like they played with a sense of urgency and we really didn't," said Head Coach Matt Corkery. "I felt like we didn't have the same type of energy and intensity coming out…We shot it a little bit better in the first half and I felt the ball moved better in the first half than in the second."
American (15-14) took a 5-2 advantage early before the Eagles went on an 11-0 run for the 16-4 lead with 9:38 remaining, forcing Bucknell to take a timeout. Audrey Dotson ended the Bison's nearly nine minute scoring drought but Ti'Asia McGeorge answered with her first trey of the game to keep the Eagles up 19-6 with 4:56 to play in the first half. Dotson tallied five more points for Bucknell to make it an eight-point contest. Geleisa George hit a jumper with under a minute to go to send American into the break with a 10-point cushion, 21-11.
The Eagles held a 34.6 to 20.0 advantage in field goal percentage and went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Bison were 1-of-3 from three-point range.
Bucknell (15-15) opened the second half on a 16-2 run to take a 27-23 lead with 13:28 remaining, forcing American to call the timeout. Anya posted the first eight points of the half for the Eagles and made it a three-point game, 32-29, with 9:58 to play.
The Eagles continued to battle back with a lay-up from Jen Dumiak under the basket knotting it at 35 apiece at the 6:38 mark. The Bison answered with back-to-back buckets before Zimmerman hit her third triple of the game to bring American within one, 39-38, with 1:47 left.
The Bison held on to its lead with Dotson going 1-of-2 from the line for the 44-40 advantage with 13.9 seconds left. Dobbs hit her first trey of the game to make it a one-point game again with seven seconds remaining. Dotson was fouled on the inbound and hit both free throws to make it 46-43 with 2.7 seconds on the clock. American inbounded it to center court where Sarah Kiely dished it to Dobbs, who got off the shot with two seconds remaining, but her attempt bounced off the backboard as the Bison pulled off the 46-43 upset.
Dotson led Bucknell with 17 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, while Lindsay Horbatuck posted 16 rebounds. Shelby Romine tallied nine points and five assists for the Bison. Bucknell finished the game with the 37.0 to 32.1 percent advantage from the field, outshooting the Eagles 50.0 to 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
American finishes its season with a record of 15-14 and an 8-6 mark in the Patriot League.
