Women's Basketball Rolls Past Colgate, 69-44

Box Score

The American University women's basketball team opened the second half of Patriot League play with a 69-44 rout of Colgate Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y.

Three players scored in double-figures with Stephanie Anya posting a game-high 14 points, shooting 4-for-4 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe. Geleisa George and Arron Zimmerman matched their career marks with 13 apiece. Sarah Kiely grabbed a game-high 10 boards. Alexis Dobbs dished out four assists with four steals.

The victory put Head Coach Matt Corkery one win away from 100 for his career and should the Eagles win against Lehigh on Wednesday, he will become the fastest coach in Patriot League history to reach the mark.

"Our defensive energy helped spark us offensively today," said Coach Corkery. "Our rebounding was excellent as well. It was a total team effort with contributions coming from everyone who saw the floor."

American (13-9, 6-2) got on a roll early, opening the game on a 8-0 run before back-to-back three-pointers from Catherine Lewis put the Raiders on the board. Kiely kicked off a 9-0 run for the Eagles, hitting American's first triple of the game for the 19-7 lead with 11:42 remaining.  American continued to roll, answering each Colgate bucket, as it went up 20 on a pair of free throws from Anya. Anya added four more points to close out the half as a trey from Randyll Butler sent the Eagles into the break with a 38-21 advantage.

American shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the first half, holding the Raiders to just 33.3 percent shooting.

Colgate (6-17, 0-8) came out of the half on a 7-2 run to put the score at 40-28 with 12:19 remaining and held the Eagles scoreless for four minutes before an Anya lay-up got American back on the board. The Eagles went on a 17-4 run to build a 25-point lead over Colgate with 5:37 left in the game.

After a bucket from Josie Stockill, Jen Dumiak hit a three to spark a 7-0 run to give American its largest lead of the game, 67-38, with 2:59 to go. The Raiders closed out the game outscoring American, 7-2, for the 69-44 final score.

Stockill was Colgate's only double-digit scorer with 10 points and leading scorer Jhazmine Lynch was held scoreless for the first time this season. Lynch and Kelly Reid tallied five rebounds apiece, with Lynch adding four steals.

American shot 48.2 percent from the floor, while the Raiders shot 31.3 percent. Colgate held the advantage from beyond the arc, shooting 30.0 percent compared to 18.2 percent for the Eagles. American converted 26 points off Colgate's 22 turnovers and outrebounded the Raiders, 40-30.

American returns to Bender Arena on Wednesday, February 13 to host Lehigh at 7 p.m. as Coach Corkery goes for his 100th win. The game will be broadcast live on Patriot League All*Access.
