Women's Basketball Bounces Back with 64-42 Win at Coppin State

A career-high 14 points from Shaquilla Curtis and Alexis Dobbs' first career double-double led the American University women's basketball team to a 64-42 rout of Coppin State on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. 

Curtis went 5-of-8 from the floor with one triple and Dobbs had 10 points and a career-high 10 assists, marking the first time an American player has registered double-digit assists since 2006. Jen Dumiak added 12 points for the Eagles. Dobbs also led the team with seven rebounds and five steals.

Arron Zimmerman and Dobbs hit back-to-back triples to open the scoring for American (7-3) and a three-point play from Curtis gave the Eagles an 11-5 advantage at the 14:10 mark. Another Zimmerman triple gave American its first 10-point advantage of the half and Dobbs added another for the 22-12 lead with 6:59 to go. 

Larrisa Carter completed a three-point play to cut the Eagles' lead to seven before an Abigail Fogg putback gave American back the 26-16 lead with 5:54 to play. Coppin State notched three straight points but a Dobbs steal and lay-up sparked a 12-0 run for the Eagles as it took a 37-19 lead into the intermission.

American shot 48.4 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from beyond the arc in the first half. Coppin State was 22.2 percent from the floor and 0-for-3 from three-point range. 

Bria Harris opened the half with three straight points for Coppin State (4-6) and five straight tallies from Carter cut the Eagles' lead to 39-27 at the 15:22 mark. A Dumiak drive sparked a 6-0 run for American as it went up 49-31, forcing Coppin State to call a timeout with 13:35 left in the game.

Coppin State made it a 13-point game, 53-40, on a bucket by Amber Griffin with 7:07 remaining but the Eagles went on another 6-0 run for the 59-40 advantage as Coppin State called another timeout. Kyra Coleman laid it in to end Coppin State's five minute scoring drought but American went 5-of-6 from the line in the final two minutes for the 64-42 win.

Carter led Coppin State with 16 points and Coleman added 15. Coleman and Janelle Lane pulled down a game-high nine rebounds as the team held a 47-31 advantage in boards. 

American outshot Coppin State, 43.6 to 30.6 percent from the floor for the game. The Eagles also went 7-for-24 from beyond the arc while Coppin State was 0-for-5.

American will take a week off for the holidays before taking on crosstown rival George Washington on Saturday, December 28 at 2 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the season.
