Box Score The American University men's soccer team took care of business on Saturday afternoon at Colgate, downing the Red Raiders, 2-1, clinching the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
AU (7-7-5, 4-3-2) got the scoring started early, with rookie Chris Fanet netting his second career goal on a one-touch volley off the cross from senior Colin Seigfreid.
Seigfreid added to his big day, scoring the game-winning goal, his third of the season, in the 21st minute. "Seigy" buried the perfect cross pass from freshman Michael Cherry.
American kept the pressure on Colgate (4-13-2, 3-5-1) all afternoon, totaling 17 shots to the Red Raiders' six. The Eagles made the most of their opportunities however, finishing 2-of-4 shots on goal, compared to 1-of-3 for Colgate.
The Red Raiders were able to get one back, scoring just before the end of the half on a free kick, but the AU defense rebounded nicely in the second half.
"It was a great win for us. Colgate is a good team. In the first half we played especially well," said head coach Todd West. "The goal at the end of the half brought them back inot the game, but "Cristo" and Stephen Hauschild really stepped up for us. Now on to the Patriot League Tourney."
Senior co-captain Cristobal Soto led the back four in front of fellow fourth-year captain Billy Knutsen, who made three saves in the match for his sixth win of the year.
The Eagles, which will be the No. 5 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. AU will travel to Lewisberg, Pa., to face the Bison on Tuesday, November 12, in th conference quarterfinals.
