Volleyball Sweeps Conference Rival Army

The American University volleyball team picked up its eighth straight win, downing Army, 3-0, to improve to 11-1 in the Patriot League on Friday night in West Point, N.Y.

American (26-2, 11-1) took a 10-3 lead to open the match and went up 18-10 on a kill by Morgan Hendrix. The Black Knights tallied back-to-back points and used a 4-1 run to battle back and cut the Eagles' lead to 23-17. A Juliana Crum kill and attack error by Megan Wilton gave American the 25-17 win and 1-0 match advantage. 

The Eagles jumped out to an 8-1 lead before Army (12-11, 9-4) tied it up at 11-all with six straight points. A kill by Crum gave American back its lead and the Eagles went up 18-14 on a kill by Kelly McCaddin. The Black Knights made it a two-point match on a kill by Wilton and ace by D.J. Phee. Army tied it up again at 22 on a 5-1 run but Crum gave American back the advantage and sparked a 3-0 run as the Eagles went up 2-0 in the match after a 25-22 victory.

American went up 12-2 in the third set and continued to roll. The Eagles notched three straight points and took an 18-6 lead on a kill by Bree Scarbrough, forcing Army to call a timeout. The Black Knights answered with three consecutive points but American was able to complete the sweep with a block by Sarah Katz and Hendrix for the 25-15 win. 

Monika Smidova led the Eagles with the double-double, posting 36 assists and 13 digs. Crum finished with a team-high 13 kills, hitting .400, and Megan Rosburg recorded 19 digs to lead American. The Eagles outhit Army .288 to .112 for the match.

Olivia Fairfield notched eight kills for the Black Knights while Vanessa Edwards had 31 assists and Phee recorded 25 digs. 

American will look to extend its win streak and clinch a spot in the 2013 Patriot League Tournament when it heads to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross on Saturday, November 9 at 4 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
