Box Score The American University volleyball team rolled to its seventh straight win, downing Norfolk State, 3-0, in its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday night in Bender Arena.
After a back-and-forth start American (25-2) took the lead for good with a 4-0 run for the 7-4 advantage. The Eagles continued to build its advantage, going up 16-10 on a kill by Kelly McCaddin. A Megan Rosburg kill sparked an 8-0 run for American and the Eagles closed out the set with a McCaddin kill for the 25-12 victory.
American jumped out to a 5-0 advantage to open the second set. Norfolk State (9-17) called the timeout to slow the Eagles' momentum and battled back within two, 6-4, on a block by Goda Jankauskaite and Coralie Jarema. American was able to pull away once again, holding off a Spartans' rally to climb to a 23-13 advantage. Darcy Moore added a kill for Norfolk State but a kill by Monika Smidova followed by a block from McCaddin and Kristyna Lindovska secured the 25-14 win and 2-0 match advantage.
The Eagles took another early lead in the third set, going up 15-6 and forcing the Spartans to call a timeout. American answered with a 7-2 run out of the break as a kill by Bree Scarbrough put the Eagles up 23-10. Norfolk State fought back with a 4-1 run but a block by Smidova completed the sweep with a 25-14 final score in set three. American finished the set with no errors, hitting a match-high .714.
The Eagles hit .488 as a team for the match. Lindovska led American with 11 kills, hitting .588, and McCaddin added nine kills with no errors for a .750 hitting percentage on the night. Smidova tallied 32 assists and three blocks and Allison Cappellino led the defensive effort with 12 digs.
The Spartans were held to a .032 hitting percentage on the night, hitting -.026 in the first set. Jankauskaite posted a team-high seven kills and Moore finished with 20 assists and a team-best nine digs.
The Eagles close out its road slate this weekend when it travels to Army on Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m. and Holy Cross on Saturday, November 9 at 4 p.m. American is back in Bender Arena to kick off a three-match homestand for its final stretch of the regular season on Wednesday, November 13 at 7 p.m. when it takes on Navy.
