Box Score The American University volleyball team continued to roll in Patriot League play, defeating Lafayette, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena.
American (24-2, 10-1) went up 9-4 in the first set and continued to pull away, notching five straight points to take an 18-8 lead. A Megan Rosburg ace and Allison Cappellino kill gave the Eagles a 21-10 advantage. American maintained its momentum and committed no errors in the entire first set, closing it out with a kill by Monika Smidova and block from Morgan Hendrix and Juliana Crum for the 25-12 win.
Kelly McCaddin and Crum put up the first four points for the Eagles before Lafayette (10-14, 2-11) got on the board. The Leopards fought back, tying it up at 8-all on an attack error by Cappellino. American was able to pull away again with a kill by Crum sparking a 7-3 run for the 15-11 lead. Kristyna Lindovska added a kill for the 16-11 advantage following a Lafayette timeout and the Eagles reached set point, 24-12, on an 8-0 run capped off by back-to-back aces by Lindovska. The Leopards added a pair of points but a kill by Cappellino secured the 2-0 match lead with a 25-14 victory in set two.
The third set was tied early before American pulled away using a 5-0 run, forcing Lafayette to call a timeout. The Eagles posted four straight tallies for a 19-10 advantage as the Leopards took another timeout. Lafayette was able to inch closer, cutting American's lead to 22-16 on an attack error by Crum, but the Eagles held off a rally with back-to-back points for the 25-18 win.
Cappellino led American with 14 kills while Crum finished with 12 kills and eight digs while hitting .500 on the day. Smidova paced the offense with 25 assists and Rosburg led the defensive effort with 10 kills. The Eagles completed the match with a .494 hitting percentage while holding Lafayette to .198.
Karissa Ciliento had 10 kills for the Leopards and Samantha Volk tallied 25 assists. Lauren Pisauro notched nine digs.
American hosts Norfolk State on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. for its final non-conference match of the season. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
