American University volleyball student-athlete Monika Smidova has been named the Molten
Patriot League Player of the Week, conference officials announced
Monday. The junior was also recognized as the AU Student-Athlete of
the Week Presented by GEICO.
Smidova helped the Eagles clinch its 11th Patriot League Regular
Season title and hosting duties for the 2013 Patriot League
Tournament, leading American to a 3-0 week. The Plzen, Czech
Republic native averaged 11.90 aps, 2.20 dps, 1.10 saps and 1.00
bps over the three matches. She opened the week notching four kills
with 31 assists, four aces, three digs and five blocks in a sweep
of Navy. Smidova then tallied a double-double to lead the Eagles
past Army in four sets, notching 52 assists and 12 digs with four
aces and four blocks. She completed her weekend with 36 assists,
seven digs, three aces, three kills and one block in a sweep of
defending Patriot League Champion Colgate for the regular season
championship. This is her second weekly honor this season.
Smidova has led the Patriot League in assists all season and is
currently averaging 10.66 aps. She also ranks fifth in the
conference with a .322 hitting percentage and is fifth with 0.41
saps.
The Eagles will host the 2013 Patriot League Tournament in
Bender Arena this weekend. American opens its run to reclaim the
Championship on Saturday, November 23 when it takes on
fourth-seeded Lehigh at 2 p.m.
