The American University volleyball team continued to roll in
Patriot League play, picking up its 12th sweep in conference action
and 10th straight win with a 3-0 victory over Navy on Wednesday
night in Bender Arena.
Navy (12-15, 8-6) maintained an early advantage and held off the
Eagles' attempts to take the lead, going up 11-8 on a kill by Alex
Cassel. A Midshipmen error on the next point sparked a 3-0 run for
American as it tied up the game at 11-all on consecutive aces by
Monika
Smidova. Navy retook the lead but the Eagles answered
with a 4-1 run for the 16-14 advantage. A block by Kelly
McCaddin and Smidova put American up 19-15 and forced
the Midshipmen to call a timeout. Navy battled back within two,
22-20, on consecutive kills by Cassel and Erin Fortner but after an
Eagles' timeout it was able to notch three straight points for the
25-20 win in set one.
American (28-2, 13-1) took the lead to open the second set and
fought off a Midshipmen rally to go up 12-5 and force Navy to call
its first timeout. The Eagles continued to roll, going on an 8-3
run for the 20-8 advantage. Kristyna
Lindovska notched back-to-back kills for the 22-9 lead
and American was able to close out the set with three straight
points for the 25-10 victory and 2-0 match lead.
The third set was knotted up five times before the Midshipmen
took an 11-9 lead on a kill by Fortner. The Eagles answered with
five straight points for the 16-13 advantage as Navy called a
timeout. American went up 21-15 on an ace by Smidova and following
a second Midshipmen timeout Navy was able to fight back within
four, 23-19, on a kill by Fortner. But the Eagles were able to
secure the sweep on a block by Lindovska and Morgan
Hendrix and kill by Allison
Cappellino for the 25-19 win.
Cappellino led American with 14 kills, hitting .480 in the
match, with a team-best 13 digs. She also tallied three aces for
the Eagles with Smidova notching four over the three sets. The
junior paced the offense with 31 assists and added five blocks.
McCaddin finished the night with six kills, six digs and six
blocks. American outhit the Midshipmen .350 to .103, committing one
error in each of the final two sets.
Fortner tallied nine kills and eight digs for Navy and Alex
Karika had 25 assists. Maeve Drummey also added eight digs for the
Midshipmen.
The Eagles close out the regular season this weekend with
back-to-back home games. American kicks off its weekend against
Lehigh on Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m. before facing Colgate on
Saturday, November 16 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day. Both matches will
be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
