Box Score The American University men's soccer team was clicking on all cylinders on Saturday night in Worcester, Mass., as the Eagles found the back of the net three times while holding Holy Cross scoreless for a 3-0 Patriot League win.
Senior forward Colin Seigfreid got the scoring started just 2:16 into the match, and AU kept rolling throughout. The American defense stood strong the entire game, as senior goalkeeper Billy Knutsen made five saves for his fourth shutout in the past six contests.
"Tonight was probably our most complete performance of the season," said head coach Todd West. "In the last three games, the guys have come together. They have defended well and it all culminated tonight."
It did not take long for the Eagles get it going at Holy Cross as senior Patrick Mehlert and rookie Michael Cherry combined to find Seigfreid for the first goal of the match just over two minute in.
AU kept the pressure on notched an insurance score in the first half in the 34th minute as the duo of Cherry and Mehlert struck again. The freshman found Mehlert 18 yards out who blasted it home for a 2-0 Eagle advantage.
While Holy Cross did own the lead in shots, 12-11, only four found their way on net as the American defense limited Crusader angles all night.
Seigfreid made it a three-point match late in the game as he found Conor Osborne for his first goal of the season, putting one home in the 85th minute.
AU was physical throughout, totaling 11 fouls to only four for Holy Cross.
Mehlert posted a match-high four shots as both he and Seigfreid registered three-point nights.
American will look to keep the momentum going in the Patriot League with two home matches next week. AU hosts Navy at Reeves Field on Wednesday, October 9, at 3 p.m., before facing Bucknell on Saturday, October 12, at 1 p.m.
