In a rematch of last season's Patriot League Championship, the American University men's soccer team battled Lafayette to a scoreless, double overtime draw on Reeves Field Saturday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Billy Knutsen made four saves in the match for his fifth shutout of the season.

In a physical conference matchup, the Eagles (4-6-5, 2-2-2) defense did well to keep Lafayette (4-3-7, 2-3-1) from finding the go-ahead goal, overcoming eight corner kicks from the Leopards. AU did outshoot Lafayette 15-11 but could not get one past the Leopard keeper.

"We are disappointed we didn't come away with the win, but the Patriot League points are valuable so we are happy to secure one," said head coach Todd West. "If we keep getting shutouts, we give ourselves a chance to win. Lafayette did a good job of making it a grind, which is their game, but we were able to keep them off the scoreboard."

Six different Eagles put a shot on net in the game with Conor Osborne, Joe Iraola and Stephen Hauschild each tallying three total shots in the game to lead the American offense.

The defense, spearheaded by Knutsen and fellow senior co-captain Cristobal Soto, overcame 11 shots, and numerous set pieces by the Leopards.

American had a few opportunities in the overtime periods to find the golden goal, including free kick late in the second extra stanza, but the Lafayette defense stood the test to record their seventh draw of the season.

AU hits the road in their next contest, traveling to Loyola for anther Patriot League showdown on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
