Box Score The American University volleyball team rallied from a first set loss, bouncing back on its way to a 3-1 win at Lehigh on Saturday night.
Lehigh (13-6, 5-3) took a 3-1 advantage to open the match and went on an 11-4 run for the 14-8 lead. The Eagles battled back within two, 14-12, before the Mountain Hawks answered with three straight tallies for the 18-13 lead. The two traded points before a 3-0 run by American made it a one-point match, 22-21. Lehigh was able to close out the set with three consecutive points with a block by Ana Vrhel and Kaylynn Genemaras securing the 25-21 win.
The Mountain Hawks led 6-2 in the second set before American (20-2, 6-1) battled back to knot it up at 8-all on a kill by Morgan Hendrix. The match was tied three more times and Lehigh pulled away again with a 6-1 run for the 19-14 advantage. The Mountain Hawks led 22-19 after the Eagles cut it to a two-point match, but American took its first lead of the set, 24-22, with a 5-0 run. A service error by Juliana Crum brought Lehigh within one, 24-23, but a kill by Kristyna Lindovska tied the match at one set apiece.
The Eagles went up 3-0 to open the third set and maintained the advantage for the remainder of the set. The Mountain Hawks battled back within one, 9-8, on a block by Vrhel and Stephanie Slater. American continued to pull away, posting four straight points for the 18-12 lead. Lehigh notched three consecutive tallies to make it a two-point match, 21-19, and cut the Eagles' lead to one, 23-22, on a kill by Jade Van Streepen. But American was able to take the 2-1 match lead on a kill by Lindovska and block by Hendrix for the 25-22 win.
After an early Mountain Hawks advantage in the fourth set the Eagles opened up a 10-0 run for a 12-3 lead. American continued to roll, posting a 6-0 run to go up 20-7 on its way to a 25-12 victory.
Crum and Monika Smidova notched double-doubles in the match. Crum added 11 kills and 11 digs while Smidova finished with 45 assists and 14 digs. Lindovska led the Eagles with 18 kills, hitting .417 in the match, and Hendrix recorded six blocks. Megan Rosburg led the defense with 17 digs. American outhit Lehigh, .295 to .208, in the match.
Amy Matula posted a double-double for the Mountain Hawks with 43 assists and 11 digs. Van Streepen led the team with 15 kills and Rachel Charles recorded 24 digs.
The Eagles head to Annapolis, Md. next to take on Navy on Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
