Men's Soccer Battles Bucknell to 1-1 Draw

Box Score

The American University men's soccer team took on Patriot League foe Bucknell in a battle of 2-1-0 conference teams on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field, playing the Bison to a 1-1, double overtime draw.

Rookie forward Joe Iraola netted the Eagles' (4-5-3, 2-1-1) score in the 12th minute, taking the feed from junior Stephen Hauschild, dribbling into the box before blasting it in for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

"I am disappointed we did not come away with the win, but definitely not disappointed in the way we played. That is a good team that we went up against," said head coach Todd West. "It was a tough goal to give up in the second but with defensive unit we had today, I felt very good about our performance."

AU dominated much of the first half controlling the tempo with crisp passes, outshooting Bucknell (7-3-1, 2-1-1) 5-3, putting four of those attempts on net.

The Bison upped its intensity in the second half, searching for the equalizer, registering nine shots in the stanza.

American's defense was up to the challenge, denying a flurry of Bucknell attempts late into the match.

In the 83rd minute the Bison were able to find the tying-score however as a deflected shot found its way off of an American defender and into the back of the net.

Despite the score by Bucknell, the Eagles made sure not to concede the go-ahead tally and nearly won it late as strike by senior Colin Seigfreid was just off the mark.

Both teams totaled three shots in the overtime with Seigfreid getting a good look in the first extra time period, but Bucknell keeper Mike Lansing was able to make the save.

Senior goalkeeper Billy Knutsen was strong in net all match long, making six saves, five coming in the second half.

American will have a week to rest up before heading to west point on Saturday, October 19, to take on the United States Military Academy at 7 p.m.
