Women's Basketball Suffers First Patriot League Loss at Navy

Box Score

The American University women's basketball team had its 18-game winning streak over conference opponents in regular season play snapped on Wednesday night at Navy, falling 61-42 to the defending conference champions in Annapolis, Md.

American (10-8, 3-1) couldn't overcome poor shooting as it went just 29.0 percent from the floor and 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. Geleisa George and Sarah Kiely led the Eagles with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Abigail Fogg posted a career-high seven rebounds, with six offensive boards, while Arron Zimmerman added six. Alexis Dobbs dished out a team-best seven assists.

Zimmerman put American on the board first before the Midshipmen registered five straight points to take a 5-2 lead at 16:37. Kiely continued to answer Navy bucket-for-bucket before the Midshipmen posted a 8-0 run for the 17-8 advantage with 4:19 remaining. Consecutive baskets from Kara Pollinger and M.L. Morrison put Navy up by 12 with 45 seconds left in the half, but Stephanie Anya completed a three-point play to cut the lead to 24-15 heading into the break.

Navy (10-9, 3-1) outshot the Eagles 38.5 to 22.6 percent from the field in the first half, while Navy's Chloe Stapleton hit the lone three-pointer of the first.

The Eagles tried to complete their fourth straight second half comeback, but Navy opened the second half on a 6-2 run and maintained its 10-point advantage for most of the game. A putback from Kiely cut the advantage to 41-31 with 8:31 to go. She knocked it away at midcourt on the next possession and Jen Dumiak picked it up and laid it in to make it a nine-point game, but that was the closest American would get as Jade Geif answered with back-to-back buckets.

Dobbs hit American's only three-pointer to keep the Eagles within 11 with 3:21 to go. Alix Membreno registered seven straight points for the 58-40 lead with 1:40 to play and Navy was able to hold off any comeback attempts for the 61-42 victory.

Navy was led by three double-digit scorers and a game-high 17 points from Membreno. Geif notched a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Membreno also tallied a team-best five assists and Stapleton added four steals. The Midshipmen shot 45.3 percent from the floor and went 2-of-16 from beyond the arc in the game.

American will look to bounce back on Saturday, January 26 when it hosts Army in Bender Arena at 2 p.m. for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The game will be broadcast live on Patriot League All*Access.
