The American University volleyball team defeated both UNC Asheville and UNC Greensboro on Saturday en route to winning the Spartan-Aggie Invitational. Kelly McCaddin was named the tournament MVP after leading the Eagles to a perfect 3-0 weekend.

American (5-3) swept UNC Asheville (3-8), 3-0, to open the day with set scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 25-18. The Eagles outhit the Bulldogs .354 to .071 in the match with Juliana Crum posting a team-high nine kills, hitting .333.

McCaddin hit a team-best .571, tallying eight kills with zero errors in the match. Kylann Scheidt paced the attack with 34 assists while Allison Cappellino notched 19 digs and Morgan Hendrix had six blocks to lead the defensive effort.

The Eagles concluded the tournament against co-hosts UNC Greensboro (4-3) on Saturday night. American needed five sets for the victory, which came by set scores of 25-23, 25-12, 24-26, 16-25 and 18-16.

Crum, Sara Rishell and Scheidt each notched double-doubles for the Eagles. Crum posted 12 kills with 13 digs while Rishell had a team-high 17 kills with 12 digs. Scheidt had a career-best 51 assists, adding 12 digs in the match. Cappellino also recorded a career-high with 27 digs. Hendrix once again led the Eagles with eight blocks to match her career-best.

Cappellino and Rishell joined McCaddin on the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event.

American will return to action next weekend when it travels to Tucson, Ariz. for the Wildcat Classic. The Eagles open the tournament on Friday, September 14 against Boise State at 3:30 p.m. and face UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m. American will then take on tournament host Arizona on Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m.
