Rishell, Crum Power Volleyball Past Lafayette; Watch Highlights

The American University volleyball team swept Lafayette, 3-0, on Friday night with Sara Rishell tallying a team-high 18 kills to lead the Eagles' attack.

"It was a good match for us, we're really focusing and concentrating on our outside attack getting stronger," said Head Coach Barry Goldberg. "It's a good start for the weekend…We were able to take Lafayette out of the game a little bit. They didn't hit the ball as well as they did in previous matches."

Lafayette (8-5, 1-2) tied the first set early, but American (9-6, 2-1) was able to score seven straight points with Kylann Scheidt adding a kill for the 14-4 advantage. Following a kill from Karissa Ciliento, the Eagles went on an 8-0 run for the 22-5 lead. The Leopards tallied three consecutive points but American was able to take the set, 25-9, with a kill from Juliana Crum.

Lafayette remained within one point of the Eagles, 9-8, to open the second set. Rishell notched three straight kills to give American a 14-8 lead. The Leopards came back within five but the Eagles were able to hold off a rally and take the second set, 25-12.

The third set featured three tied scores before American was able to break away to a 11-7 lead off a kill from Kelly McCaddin. Lafayette cut the Eagles' advantage to three but couldn't stop American's attack as they went on a 6-2 run. The Leopards tallied three straight points before American closed out the set with a 6-1 run for the 25-16 victory.

Rishell recorded a .455 hitting percentage while Crum registered 10 kills, hitting .533 in the match. Scheidt dished out 36 assists while Bree Scarbrough had three service aces and Allison Cappellino led the defense with nine digs.

Brianne Giangiobbe led the Leopards with six kills while Lauren Pisauro added 15 digs. Sarah Frohnapfel had a team-best 20 assists.

American held Lafayette to a .036 hitting percentage, while registering a .476 hitting percentage for the match.

American will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, September 29 when it hosts Lehigh at 4 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
