The American University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory
over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon, with three players hitting
over .300 for the match.
American (8-6, 1-1) outhit the Crusaders .344 to -.011 on the
day. Kelly
McCaddin led the Eagles with a .474 hitting
percentage, notching 10 kills with one error while Morgan
Hendrix added nine kills with one error to hit .444.
Kylann
Scheidt had a team-high 23 assists with Rebecca
Heath registering nine digs for the American defense.
Hendrix also added a team-best five blocks.
Holy Cross (0-15, 0-2) kept it close to open the first set
before the Eagles broke out to a 21-10 lead. A block from Callie
Black and Megan Lynch made it 21-12 but American registered four
straight points for the 25-12 victory.
The second set was tied at four different points in the match
before American recorded 10 consecutive tallies for an 18-7 lead
off a service ace from Bree
Scarbrough. The Crusaders came back within seven
before the Eagles were able to take the set, 25-17.
American took a 13-4 lead early in the third set, forcing Holy
Cross to call the timeout. The Crusaders cut it to an eight point
match but American responded with a 6-1 run to take a 21-9 lead.
The Eagles were able to close out the set, 25-13, with a kill from
Sara
Rishell for the 3-0 sweep.
Lynch led Holy Cross with nine kills, hitting .214 in the match.
Hannah Grace Stokes paced the offense with 15 assists while also
adding a team-best 11 digs.
"Now we're going to have to prepare and get ourselves ready for
each week," said Head Coach Barry
Goldberg. "We've got nine weeks of this Patriot League
season and week one is now over and we split it. We're going to try
to keep getting better and better as we go and take a look at us at
the end and we'll see where we're at."
American returns to action next weekend with a pair of Patriot
League match-ups in Bender Arena. The Eagles host Lafayette on
Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m. before taking on Lehigh on Saturday,
September 29 at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on
Eagles
