Box Score 2 The American University volleyball team opened the Arizona Desert Classic with a 3-1 victory over Boise State, but couldn't continue its win streak as it fell, 3-1, to UC Irvine on Friday night.
American (6-4) dropped the first set in its match against Boise State (6-6) by a score of 25-16 on Friday afternoon. After eight ties in the second set, the Eagles were able to pick up the 26-24 victory and continue its momentum with final set scores of 25-15 and 25-22 to win the match.
Sara Rishell led the Eagles with 16 kills, also recording a team-best seven blocks, while Kelly McCaddin notched 11 kills, hitting .200. Kylann Scheidt registered 33 assists with seven digs and three blocks. Allison Cappellino had a team-high 16 digs to lead the defensive effort for the Eagles. American outhit the Broncos .165 to .062 in the match.
The Eagles returned to the court Friday night and picked up a victory over UC Irvine (5-7) in the first set, 25-23. But the Anteaters were able to close out the day by taking the final three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13.
Rishell posted a team-high nine kills with six blocks against UC Irvine while Bree Scarbrough tallied six kills. Scheidt had 25 assists for American with Cappellino adding 16 digs.
Marisa Bubica led UC Irvine with 20 kills in the match as the Anteaters outhit American, .261 to .008.
The Eagles close out the tournament on Saturday, September 15 when they face tournament host Arizona at 1 p.m. EST.
